Ideal projects

Floors for the rooms you want to get right.

FMC Flooring works with homeowners renovating good-quality houses — the kind of project where the floor has to look right from every angle, sit perfectly against new kitchens and units, and still look considered in ten years’ time.

  • Large kitchens
  • Family rooms
  • Open-plan living spaces
  • Extensions and new garden rooms
  • High-end renovations
  • Herringbone installations
  • Borders and feature strips
  • Intricate, drawn-out layouts

Whether it is one room or a whole ground floor, the standard is the same: the floor underneath is assessed properly, the setting out is planned, and the finish is treated as the point of the job rather than the end of it. Premium LVT flooring across Barnsley, Sheffield and Lincolnshire.

Consult, supply and fit

One person, from the first visit to the final inspection.

Jon helps you choose the flooring, assesses the floor underneath it, and handles the complete installation himself. Nothing is passed to a subcontractor, and nothing is left for someone else to get right.

01

Home Visit

A free visit to your home to look at the space, the light, the layout and how you want the floor to feel. No pressure, no sales script — just an honest conversation about what will work.

02

Flooring Selection

Choosing from the Amtico, Karndean and Polyflor ranges — the product, format, finish and laying pattern that suits the room, the kitchen and the way you actually live in it.

03

Subfloor Assessment

Before anything is ordered, the floor underneath is assessed: levels, moisture, existing coverings, and exactly what will be needed to give the new floor a sound, flat, dry base.

04

Preparation

Plywood, screed, primers, smoothing compounds, moisture checks and curing time. This is the part of the job that decides how the finished floor performs — so it is planned in, not fitted in around the edges.

05

Installation

Jon fits the floor personally — careful setting out for herringbone, borders and multi-room layouts, clean transitions, tidy cutting and a full handover when the room is back in use.

FMC Flooring prefers to consult, supply, prepare and fit the complete floor rather than simply fit flooring bought elsewhere. Every stage affects the next one, and the finish is only as good as the weakest of them.

LVT specialism

A specialist in premium luxury vinyl tile.

LVT is a precision product. Pattern, direction and layout are usually decided long before the first tile is laid, and small decisions at the start show up everywhere at the end. Jon works with three of the best-known manufacturers in the market.

Premium LVT
Amtico

Design-led luxury vinyl tile with a wide choice of formats, finishes and laying patterns — well suited to kitchens, dining rooms and large open-plan floors.

Premium LVT
Karndean

Realistic wood and stone effects with a strong reputation for durability. A popular choice where a family room or hallway has to take daily life in its stride.

Premium LVT
Polyflor

Dependable, hard-wearing LVT with a broad range of designs — often used across multi-room layouts and heavier-use areas of the home.

Layouts and detailing

  • Herringbone
  • Straight lay
  • Borders
  • Feature strips
  • Parquet effects
  • Multi-room flooring
  • Complex cuts and transitions
  • Doorways, thresholds and steps

A border that runs around a room, a change of direction where a kitchen becomes a dining space, or a herringbone set out from a centre line rather than a corner — these are the details that make a floor look designed rather than simply installed.

Jon will tell you where a pattern will sit best in your space, how many rooms it can run through without breaking, and what a layout will cost in materials and time before you commit to it. Amtico and Karndean fitting across Barnsley, Sheffield and the wider Lincolnshire area.

Floor preparation

A beautiful floor starts underneath the floor.

Most flooring failures are not the flooring’s fault. They come from what happened — or did not happen — before the first tile was laid: a subfloor that was not flat, dry or sound, and a preparation stage that was rushed to get the visible part finished sooner.

Level, dry and correctly prepared subfloors matter because LVT is thin, precise and glued down. It follows the shape of whatever is underneath it, and it moves with any moisture it is sitting on. Get the base right and the floor performs for years. Skip it, and the problem usually appears months later — often after the kitchen has been fitted.

Bad plywood

Incorrect grade, thickness or fixing. Ply that moves, dips or is laid over an uneven base will telegraph straight through a glued-down floor.

Incorrect screed

The wrong screed, or the right one applied badly, can leave a surface that is unstable, dusty or unsuitable for adhesive.

Incorrect primer

Primers are product-specific. Use the wrong one and the adhesive may not bond properly — a failure you cannot see until it starts to lift.

Poor levelling

Small hollows and high spots cause rocking tiles, visible ridges and joints that open up as the floor settles.

Failure to check moisture

Concrete and screed release moisture for a long time. Without checks, that moisture finds its way into the adhesive and the floor above it.

Poor damp testing

Testing done late, done once, or done without recording the results is not really testing at all.

Rushed preparation

Drying and curing time cannot be compressed. Rushing the base to start laying sooner is the most common cause of a floor that fails early.

Checked as a matter of course

Moisture, damp and levels are checked as standard, not as an optional extra. If your floor needs more preparation than you were expecting, Jon will explain what and why — and what happens if it is left undone.

It is not the most glamorous part of a renovation, but it is the part that decides whether your kitchen floor still looks right in five years’ time. You will hear about plywood, primers and drying times. That is deliberate.

Quote education

What does your flooring quote actually include?

Quotes for the same room can look very different, and that is usually because they cover very different things. When you are comparing them, these are the questions worth asking — of any fitter, including FMC Flooring.

Are moisture and damp checks included before anything is laid?
Is subfloor preparation included, or quoted separately once work has started?
Is levelling or a smoothing compound included — and how many millimetres does it allow for?
Is plywood included, and to what specification and thickness?
Is screed involved, and who is responsible for it and its curing time?
Are the correct primers and adhesives specified for the product being fitted?
Is drying or curing time built into the programme, or assumed?
If a problem appears later, who is responsible for putting it right?
The cheapest quote can become expensive if the preparation is rushed or missed.

No criticism intended — it is simply worth knowing what you are comparing. FMC Flooring sets out preparation, materials and fitting as one complete piece of work, so the figure you are given is the figure for the finished floor, not for the visible part of it.

About Jon

Thirty years of flooring, and still on his knees doing it.

Jon started flooring with his father in 1992. The family business was Mounts of Royston, and Jon learned the trade the long way — preparing floors, setting out patterns, cutting accurately and finishing properly. That grounding never left.

He later established FMC Flooring Ltd, which has been trading for around 13 years. Along the way he worked directly for John Lewis, completing flooring projects for more than 1,000 of their customers — work carried out in people’s homes to the standard a brand like that expects.

Today, Jon personally completes the work rather than passing it to another team. If he quotes your floor, he fits your floor. That is the whole point of the business, and it is why the preparation gets the attention it does.

Jon will probably tell you more than you ever expected to know about plywood, primers and why your floor is not quite as level as it looks.

Guarantee

Guaranteed workmanship, in writing.

A floor is only as good as the person who fitted it — which is why the guarantee covers the fitting, the preparation and the adhesives, not just the product on top.

2 Years
Fitting & workmanship guarantee

Every FMC Flooring installation carries a two-year workmanship guarantee. If a fitting problem occurs within that period, Jon will return and correct it — no argument, no disappearing act.

~10 Years
Manufacturer warranty, product dependent

Product warranties are typically around 10 years, depending on the manufacturer and the specific product chosen. The exact cover for your floor will be confirmed before you commit.
